GRAY WATER

Gray water is all the waste water which is produced from your home except the water from your toilets. Gray water from your washing machine, bathroom sink, tub and shower can be used as long as you didn't use bleach in your wash. You cannot use toilet, kitchen sink, or dishwasher.

The dish, shower , sink and laundry water comprise 50-80% of our residential water use. Gray water contains the soap, hair and other residue which go down your sink. If you use the proper soaps, GREEN SOAPS, you can create a liquid culture that can become a type of plant food.

Today there are 8 million gray water systems in the United States with 22 million users. In the 60 years that we have had gray water systems there has not been one documented case of gray water transmitted illness. You cannot use gray water on lawns or vegetables but it can be used on flowers and fruit trees. Gray water can not be used on edible plants which touch the ground.

DO NOT store gray water. Utilize a pipe from the house running downhill into the properly designed mulch basin to water nearby plants. The mulch basin has at least 2 inches of mulch filters for the water to help the breakdown of bacteria. The water then filters out to nearby plants. Gray water cannot be used with traditional irrigation lines because the particles in it can clog the lines. It is advised that you use a plumber familiar with gray water diversion and or landscaping professional.

Gray water systems must be designed for the landscape, elevations, slopes and existing plumbing.

Check your local ordinances at your City County Building, while some may require special permits to use laundry water, other permits for bath, shower and sink may be a simple permit.
